In August 2025, Nicole Collier spent days sleeping on the floor of the Texas House chamber rather than agree to a police escort, turning a hallway rule into national news.
Collier is a Fort Worth attorney and small business owner who has represented House District 95 since 2013, becoming the first woman to chair the Texas House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee. She has chaired the Texas Legislative Black Caucus and has repeatedly clashed with GOP leadership over voting rights, including joining the 2021 walkout to block a restrictive voting bill and, in 2025, refusing a state trooper escort during a redistricting fight and later suing over it.

Collier’s take on Texas values
Collier joined the 2021 Democratic walkout to block a bill that added new ID requirements for elderly and disabled mail voters and restricted voter assistance, and in 2025 sued over being confined to the House floor and put under police escort during a fight over new redistricting maps.
