In February 2024, Tarrant County ended its contract with a private prison. Lydia Bean, an Arlington mom and Harvard-trained sociologist, says she helped persuade the county's five-member board to do it. Now she's running for County Clerk, the office that keeps marriage licenses, property deeds and court paperwork.

Bean co-founded Whistleblower Aid, a legal nonprofit that helps government workers report lawbreaking. She says she has led campaigns against predatory payday lenders and for paid sick leave. She runs a consulting firm for nonprofits, attends Broadway Baptist Church, and lives in Arlington with her husband, public artist Norman Lee, and their two children. She is running alongside Alisa Simmons' Democratic slate and says she'll protect free and fair elections.
