Dione Sims is the granddaughter of Opal Lee, the 'Grandmother of Juneteenth,' and now helps lead the annual Fort Worth freedom walk that made Juneteenth a national holiday.
A Fort Worth native who graduated from Southwest High School and Texas Wesleyan University, Sims founded the nonprofit Unity Unlimited in 2000 to engage local youth and has worked alongside her grandmother producing Fort Worth's Juneteenth celebrations for years. In 2026 she's running for Congress in the heavily Republican TX-25 district, saying she wants to protect people's freedoms and make sure families can afford healthcare, wages, and education.
